Wise Opts Out After Demotion

Sep 24, 2014 7:24 PM

Dewayne Wise opted out of his contract with the Marlins on Wednesday, a day after he was reassigned to the minor leagues. Wise, 33, has been bothered by a sprained left big toe for the last week and a half. Known for his defense, he hit .250 with a .304 on-base percentage and a pair of home runs in 52 Grapefruit League at-bats. Florida had been hopeful Wise would remain in the organization after he came to Spring Training as a non-roster invitee.

Ethier Thinks He's Entering Final Season With Dodgers

May 31, 2014 4:18 PM

Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier believes that this will be his final year with the team because, "a lot of signs are pointing that way." Ethier is entering the final season of a two-year, $15.25 million contract that will pay him $9.25 million this year. However, he won't be eligible for free agency until after 2012 because he won't have six years of big league service time at the end of this season. The Dodgers can choose to non-tender Ethier, which would make him a free agent. They went that route with Russell Martin over the winter. "My salary is increasing each year," Ethier said. "I would say the likeliness of me being here beyond this year, it's not just my decision. ... I have been kind of lucky to be in one spot in baseball for as long as I have been, for six years now. That is a long time to be in one city playing for one team. There is no inclination now other than to go out and play this year and see what we've got. "If I don't play well, we have seen them non-tender guys here. If you do play well, sometimes they don't offer those guys arbitration because their salaries are too high."

Wilson Didn't 'Bite At The First Offer' From Rangers

Jul 18, 2014 11:55 PM

C.J. Wilson said Tuesday that the Rangers made him a long-term contract offer a few weeks ago, but that it's too late in the process to get anything done before Opening Day. "They did eventually make an offer," Wilson said during an appearance on the Ben & Skin Show on ESPN 103.3 FM in Dallas. "But it didn't really make any sense for me to bite at the first offer. I was like, 'Well, maybe if you guys would have made that offer in January we would have had time to work it out.' It will take a little longer than two or three days or a week." Wilson has said this spring that he doesn't want any contract talks distracting from his preparation and the team's goals this season. He is making $7 million in 2011 just one season removed from joining the starting rotation and will be a free agent at the end of the season.

Posada Open To Playing Elsewhere

Oct 16, 2014 4:51 PM

Jorge Posada is open to playing for another team if he feels he can contribute next season and the Yankees don't have a role for him. Posada, who will turn 40 during the upcoming season, is New York's new designated hitter after more than a dozen years at catcher. "I feel like I can keep playing, I feel like I can still contribute," Posada said. "That's the toughest one," he said of the possibility of moving to another team. "I really don't want to go anywhere else. I would like to stay here." If the Yankees don't want him back in 2012 and the situation is right, he'll put on another jersey. "I would, if it's the right situation," he explained. "It's got to be the right situation."

Doug Davis To Hold Audition Thursday

Jun 4, 2014 7:56 PM

Veteran pitcher Doug Davis will hold an audition for interested teams on Thursday. Davis, who was limited to eight starts with the Brewers last season because of a heart problem and then an elbow injury that required surgery, will pitch in Arizona as he looks for a contract. He has been throwing off a mound for more than a month. "Doug is ready to go," agent Steve Canter said. "It's not often that somebody like this pops up in the market the last week of Spring Training." Canter said Davis would need a few starts in Triple-A to get built up, but that he'd be ready to help a big league rotation within a matter of weeks. "He's getting a lot of interest," Canter said. "We'll see how it plays out. You look around and see some significant injuries this spring. Doug could help a team."

Heath Bell Still Insists On Three Years

Jun 14, 2014 5:14 AM

Heath Bell's agents had a productive meeting with the Padres last week, according to the reliever. Bell wants to remain in San Diego and will take a discount in order to do so, but he insists on a long-term contract extension. "My biggest thing is that I'd like three years," Bell said. "That's my biggest thing. If it means taking less money, then that's something I'll do to make sure I'm here for the next three years or more." Bell can become a free agent after the 2011 season and the Padres would like to see how the season plays out before doing anything long-term.

Agent: Gonzalez, Red Sox Could Have Deal By April

Feb 17, 2014 11:42 AM

After a meeting with Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein, the agent for Adrian Gonzalez believes the two sides will agree to a contract extension by April. "I would anticipate something in April," agent John Boggs said. "When in April? I don't know. It could be the beginning, middle, end. That's really the parameters. If something drags it on past that, then yeah, we'd probably have to revisit a lot of things, but I don't anticipate that at all." Gonzalez will be a free agent after the 2011 season and the two sides hadn't talked since the first baseman was acquired from San Diego in early December. "As expected, we had a very positive meeting with Theo," said Boggs. "At the end of the day, everything's been as expected. We sat down and discussed where basically Adrian's at. I think it's just going to move very positively. "The main thing is the health issue. When they've seen him play every day, I think they're going to have a degree of comfort, and that's probably when they're going to get something done."

Cardinals Can Void Wainwright's Contract

Apr 21, 2014 10:45 AM

Adam Wainwright's second-place finish in last year's Cy Young voting vested the $21 million option in his contract for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. However, there is an injury clause in his contract that will allow St. Louis to decline the options if the pitcher finishes the 2011 season on the disabled list. After undergoing Tommy John surgery earlier this year, Wainwright will be on the DL for the entire season. The Cardinals must choose between guaranteeing $21 million to an ace, who will make $9 million in 2012, or letting him go into the open market. They could also renegotiate Wainwright's contract. "I'm actually really happy that I have that option, that I have that clause in there right now," Wainwright said. "One way or the other, if I'm hurt and I can never come back, I would feel bad taking that much money from a team I couldn't help. If (the Cardinals) don't want to pick it up, then I'll be a free agent sooner."
